PITTSBURGH (May 26, 2004)— Emerson Process
Management announced today that it has won a $6.4 million contract
to modernize ENDESA's As Pontes power plant, the largest fossil-fuel
power plant in Spain.
Emerson will engineer, install and commission the plant's new
automation system, anchored by Emerson’s PlantWeb® digital
plant architecture. ENDESA is extending the plant’s life
by modifying its boiler to burn low-sulfur imported coal, and installing
a state-of-the-art control system. The plant previously had been
fueled by lignite from a nearby mine.
"Emerson long has been a valuable partner, providing ENDESA
with superior control systems and service at our plants throughout
Spain," said Luis Fernandez Sabugal, director, As Pontes power
plant in Galicia. "So when the time came for such an important
project, we went with a trusted control solution."
"Our relationship with ENDESA spans more than 50 years," said
John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. "We believe
this is a testament to the superior capabilities and value of our
technology as well as the expertise and dedication of our people.”
Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will coordinate
and supervise the project, which will include installation of Emerson
Ovation® expert control system to control the boiler, steam
turbine, feedwater turbine, BMS/BPS and auxiliaries at the As Pontes
plant.
Emerson’s contract includes the engineering, hardware,
software, factory acceptance testing, installation – which
will be implemented on a per unit basis (one per year) while the
plant remains online – and start-up.
At Unit 1, Emerson will install eight Ovation redundant controllers
with local and remote I/O, six dual CRT operator consoles, one
engineering/database server and one eDB historian. The network
will receive information from several existing PLCs via seven serial
links. In all, the Ovation system will manage 7,000 total I/O points
and 560 datalinked points.
The Ovation system will be enhanced by Emerson’s AMS™ Suite
of software applications for predictive maintenance, performance
monitoring, and economic optimization. AMS™ Suite captures
and analyzes information about mechanical equipment, electrical
systems, process equipment, instruments and valves. This window
into plant assets translates into improved plant availability and
process stability with decreased maintenance costs.
Emerson’s Power & Water Solutions team will work closely
with ENDESA’s team at the site to gather existing information
to generate the database, discuss and agree on control strategies,
and develop the 80 graphics that will be the base for the operation
of the four units.
PlantWeb digital plant architecture is an automated solution
that delivers asset management, process control and management
execution through intelligent field devices and critical plant
assets, standards and scalable platforms, and integrated modular
software. Throughout the plant, control and monitoring of the process
is performed by intelligent field devices including Rosemount® pressure,
flow, temperature and analytical instruments. The
field devices deliver predictive diagnostic information to AMS
Device Manager software within the Ovation system.
The Ovation expert control system with AMS Suite gives users
higher levels of plant availability, reliability and environmental
compliance. From basic control and monitoring to plant-wide integration,
Ovation offers seamless communication with the intelligent field
devices and other critical plant assets using AMS Suite predictive
maintenance software to deliver the power of predictive intelligence.
Embedded advanced control applications, tailored to meet the challenges
of electricity generation, ensure full optimization of critical
processes. Built using the latest commercially available hardware
platforms, operating systems and network architectures, only the
Ovation expert control system stays new in the face of rapidly
advancing computing technology.
