PITTSBURGH (April 5, 2005) — Emerson
Process Management is demonstrating its power industry expertise
at the 2005 Electric Power Conference & Exhibition, April 5-7 in Chicago.
Emerson’s control solutions, which are tailored specifically to meet
the unique needs of the power industry, will be featured at booth 211.
"By combining our wealth of industry experience with leading-edge
technologies, Emerson has become the control solutions supplier
of choice for the power industry,” said Bob Yeager, president,
Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson.
Yeager, who points out that utilities rely on Emerson’s
control systems to generate more than 35 percent of U.S. electricity
supply, continues: “This conference is another opportunity
to demonstrate how power generators can control critical power
generation processes, increase plant efficiencies and megawatt
production, and realize long-term O&M savings through Emerson’s
unmatched combination of people, technology and experience.”
Powerful
Control Solutions
The Ovation® expert control system, a key technology that
powers Emerson’s PlantWeb® digital plant architecture,
is designed and built specifically for the power generation industry.
Proven in thousands of power installations around the world, sales
of the Ovation control system to utilities have surpassed $1 billion.
The latest features of Ovation include the addition of virtual
controller technology to Ovation’s Simulation Suite, new
cyber-security features and functionality that help customers take
additional proactive measures to enhance the security of their
power generation facilities, and PlantWeb Alerts, which deliver
unique alert and user support guidance triggered by diagnostics
from Emerson intelligent field devices, making it possible to address
a problem before it impacts operations.
Beyond these enhancements,
Ovation also boasts a number of industry-leading advanced technologies
to support the power industry, including:
- Incorporation of embedded advanced algorithms specifically
tailored to meet the challenges of electricity generation;
- A mission-critical, 100 MB Fast Ethernet network for high-speed
communications of plant information;
- The industry’s most powerful controller with the fastest
duty cycle available; and
- A full line of analog, digital and special-purpose turbine
and boiler control modules.
Ovation’s integrated digital bus capabilities leverage
Foundation™ fieldbus, HART, DeviceNet™ and Profibus
DP industry standard communications protocols. This open, standards-based
approach enables power generation customers to optimize reliability,
performance and environmental compliance through the integration
of high-speed communications networks, intelligent field devices
and bus I/O technologies. Emerson’s AMS™ Suite of software
applications capture and analyze information about mechanical equipment,
electrical systems, process equipment, instruments and valves,
thereby providing a window into plant operations and enhancing
predictive intelligence.
"Used by the top 10 U.S. power companies,
Ovation’s
advanced technologies provide our customers with the decision
support and corrective action information they need to reduce
costs, boost plant efficiency and stay competitive,” said
Yeager.
The Smart Way to Achieve Dramatic Optimization Results
Emerson
will also feature its SmartProcess® plant optimization
software at the conference. This software can be integrated into
the Ovation control system but is also compatible other suppliers’ control
systems. SmartProcess’ 12 modules offer adaptive improvement
solutions to cost effectively help utilities find a balance among
the following seemingly conflicting issues:
- Environmental Management – By targeting key performance
goals for NOx, SO 2 and opacity, it is possible to significantly
reduce emissions while maintaining efficiency.
- Unit Performance – Enhancing the performance of individual
units through improved load flexibility, boiler efficiency and
heat rate, for example, creates a corresponding improvement in
the entire power plant or fleet.
- Operational Flexibility – Optimizing ramp rate, startup
conditions and other variables enables power plants to operate
at their fullest potential.
- Fleet Management – Integrated forecasting, lifecycle
costing and operations and maintenance planning enable plants
to balance generation performance with profitable business practices.
Studies Reinforce Value of Emerson’s PlantWeb Approach
Emerson
will also highlight findings from three recent studies that demonstrate
how adopting a digital bus-based architecture can translate into
millions of dollars in construction cost savings for new coal-fired
plants, combined-cycle plants and wet scrubbers. The three studies,
all conducted by JDI Contracts Inc. and commissioned by Emerson,
identified and compared construction costs for two approaches – traditional
hard-wired I/O approach and digital bus-based I/O approach – for
an instrumentation & control
system.
All studies concluded that the digital bus-based
approach created opportunities for significant savings: $19 million
for new coal-fired plant construction, $3.9 million for new combined-cycle
plant construction, and nearly $3.9 million for new wet scrubber
construction. These findings validate the integrated, intelligent
and highly automated PlantWeb approach advocated by Emerson,
according to Yeager. “These
studies reinforce what Emerson has experienced first-hand in
other industries – that the early adoption of PlantWeb digital
plant architecture dramatically impacts costs,” he said.
Whether
it’s through ongoing enhancements to optimization
and control solutions, or helping power customers realize the measurable
benefits of adopting the PlantWeb approach, Emerson’s objective
is clear, according to Yeager. “As the number-one control
systems supplier to U.S. power generators, Emerson is committed
to offering a combination of leading-edge technologies and industry
expertise that makes it possible for our customers to achieve their
operational and financial objectives not just today, but for years
to come.”
