PITTSBURGH, PA (December 6, 2005) — Today at POWER-GEN International 2005, Emerson Process Management announced the latest release of its Ovation® expert control system. Already the power industry's leading control solution with thousands of installations worldwide, the release features enhanced historian capability, redesigned controller and I/O modules, and new engineering tools.

Unlike other control systems, Ovation was developed specifically to meet the unique challenges of the power generation industry, with features such as embedded advanced control algorithms, a mission-critical Fast Ethernet network and a full line of analog, digital and special-purpose turbine and boiler control modules. Ovation is a key component of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, and can leverage digital bus features proven to deliver major project cost savings and operations efficiency.

This latest release of the Ovation system enables a new ergonomically redesigned controller and I/O modules. Beyond aesthetics, the new modular construction of these restyled components translates into significant benefits for customers, including improved environmental compatibility and better protection of the electronics, lower power requirements, enhanced performance through a redesigned hardware and software architecture, and enhanced serviceability.

In addition, significant enhancements have been made to the Ovation system's historian capabilities. The historian can now be configured to run either as a standalone unit or on an operator station, and features increased capacity to 100,000 points. Furthermore, the historian now offers a highly robust redundancy option, in that a set of two historians may be deployed as redundant partners so in the event of a failover, the second historian “backfills” gaps in the data stored by the partner.

With this latest release, Ovation now supports the migration of Emerson's WDPF® Q-Line I/O to Ovation I/O. The WDPF-to-Ovation migration path has always allowed customers to retain their existing Q-Line I/O. With this latest enhancement, customers who want to take advantage of the enhanced functionality and serviceability of Ovation I/O can do so without the time and expense of reterminating wires.

In accordance with global standards and languages, the Ovation system now offers a more flexible tagging scheme capable of significantly longer tag names.

"The core of the Ovation strategy is to continually incorporate the latest leading-edge technologies, features and functions,” explained Bob Yeager, president of Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center. “This innovative product evolution philosophy is part of our commitment to arm power generators with the technology to control critical power generation processes, increase plant efficiencies and megawatt production, and realize long-term O&M savings. We're convinced this approach is a key reason the top 10 U.S. power companies rely on Ovation to simultaneously reduce costs and optimize plant performance.”
