PITTSBURGH (May 16, 2005) — Emerson
Process Management, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR), announced
today that it has signed a major, multi-year agreement with the
Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC).
Emerson will install its Ovation® expert control system
at the District’s Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (WRP),
the largest wastewater treatment facility in the world with a capacity
to process 1.3 billion gallons per day. The Stickney WRP serves
2.4 million people in a 260-square-mile area including downtown
Chicago and 43 suburban communities.
As part of the agreement, Emerson will supply hardware, software,
programming, factory testing, training, and on-site startup and
testing, as well as extended maintenance and service. The installation
of the Ovation system will be done over the next several years,
with a potential value to Emerson of more than $25 million. The
company’s Power & Water Solutions industry center will
oversee and supervise the effort which is the third major project
Emerson has had with the District. Previous projects include Lockport
sluice gate and hydro turbine controls with remote monitoring at
the downtown Water Control Center, and control systems for the
Hanover, Kirie and Egan water treatment plants.
:An expert control system like Ovation can be expected
to generate overall operation and maintenance efficiencies through
improved data acquisition, process monitoring and control – and
those benefits are magnified exponentially when you consider a
project of this size,” said John Berra, president of Emerson
Process Management. “The Stickney project represents an opportunity
to showcase the power of our fully integrated distributed control
solution on a grand scale.”
Ovation is an automation solution that optimizes the operations and
economics of water and wastewater facilities. At the Stickney plant,
the Ovation expert control system will integrate all existing plant
controls including a variety of PLC systems and controls ranging
from recent installations to equipment over 50 years old. The Ovation
system will also integrate remote site controls at the Mainstream
and Racine Avenue pumping stations and the District’s Tunnel
and Reservoir Project SCADA system, one of the largest public works
projects for pollution and flood control.
