PITTSBURGH, PA (May 23, 2006) — Emerson Process Management and Symantec Corp. announced today an agreement to provide comprehensive cyber-security products and services for power generators that utilize Emerson's Ovation® expert control system. Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will offer customers three proven Symantec security products that have been validated specifically to operate with the Ovation system. Ovation, a key technology that powers Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture, features embedded tools and applications specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the power industry.

The Symantec offerings available to Emerson's Ovation customers will help them comply with industry regulations and standards. Most notable is the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards, which will become effective June 1, 2006. The mandatory standards, which will be enforced by an arm of the federal government, call for the identification and protection of critical cyber assets, including computers, software, SCADA and process control systems, and the networks that support those systems related to the reliable operation of bulk electric systems.

According to Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson, the agreement leverages the strengths of both companies. “Our agreement with Symantec, the recognized leader in information security, underscores Emerson's ongoing commitment to arm our customers with the products and services they need to continue to operate their plants securely and reliably,” said Yeager.

Gary Sevounts, senior director of industry solutions for Symantec, agrees. “This agreement brings together two companies that are leaders in their respective fields. Our combined expertise will provide electric power companies engaged in the power generation area with a tested and validated layer of protection and will help them comply with new industry regulations and standards.”

The cyber-security tools, which have been fully validated for Ovation, will provide protection at key access points. These include:

  • Symantec AntiVirus Software – Provides automated virus and spyware protection for workstations and network servers. Centralized configuration, deployment, alerting and logging enables operators to manage the network to protect nodes that are vulnerable to virus attacks.

  • Symantec Gateway Security 5600 Series appliances – Include full inspection firewall technology, intrusion prevention and intrusion detection, URL-based content filtering, antispam and IPsec-compliant virtual private networking technology with hardware-assisted high-speed encryption.

  • Symantec Network Security 7100 Series appliances – Sit on the Ovation highway and provide real-time, network intrusion prevention to protect critical networks and mitigate disruption caused by known and unknown attacks and worms.

These cyber-security technologies will be further enhanced by Emerson's SureServiceSM customer support programs, including security management, assessment, monitoring and response services.

The Symantec products, which complement Ovation's existing cyber-security features and functionality, are part of Emerson's ongoing and comprehensive commitment to providing customers with solutions that address evolving cyber-security challenges. According to Yeager, it is this commitment that makes Emerson the control system supplier of choice for the power industry.

"Leading utilities around the world, including the top 10 U.S. power companies, rely on Ovation,” said Yeager, who points out that utilities rely on Emerson's control systems to generate more than 35 percent of the U.S. electricity supply. “Because of the industry's considerable reliance on Emerson control systems, we expect this agreement to have a significant, positive impact on the safety and reliability of the electricity supply.”
