PITTSBURGH (November 2, 2004) — Emerson Process Management announced today that it will modernize the turbine and boiler feed pump control systems at the four-unit, 1400-megawatt Maor David Power Station A in Hadera, Israel. The project is part of a larger effort by Israel Electric Corporation, the only integrated electric utility in the State of Israel, to construct new generation facilities and expand and improve existing plants to meet increased electricity demand.

Under the $2.5 million contract, the Power & Water Solutions industry center of Emerson will install a redundant Ovation® turbine control system at each of the four units. The Ovation system, which will be linked to the plant’s existing Emerson WDPF® data processing and monitoring system, will monitor and control the steam turbine generator and boiler feed pump turbine, including all safety functions and steam flow control. In all, the control system will manage more than 8,000 hardwired and Ethernet soft points. The new system is scheduled to be operational as follows: Unit 3, December 2004; Unit 2, May 2005; Unit 4, December 2005; Unit 1, June 2006.

"Over the years, we have collaborated with Emerson on a number of projects, so we were well aware of how Ovation can optimize plant operations,” said Taly Daniely, controls & computers department manager, Israel Electric. Overall, Israel Electric Corporation serves more than eight million customers with electricity from six power stations, most of which utilize Emerson’s control system technology.

"Emerson takes pride in building lasting relationships with our customers, and so naturally we were pleased to add another chapter to our association with Israel Electric,” said Bob Yeager, president, Emerson Power & Water Solutions. “By optimizing plant operations at Maor David A with the Ovation control system, Israel Electric is continuing its efforts to meet the growing demand for electricity in the region,” he continued.

Ovation: Built for the Power Industry
According to Yeager, Emerson’s decades of experience designing, installing and supporting turbine controls makes the company uniquely qualified to provide a control solution designed for power generation. For example, the Ovation control system to be installed at Maor David A incorporates the following applications specifically designed for improving steam turbine control:

  • Load Demand – Interfaces and coordinates boiler and turbine operations; optimizes the plant’s generation process by selecting the operating mode that most effectively meets current power demands.
  • Valve Positioner I/O Module – Provides closed-loop position control of major servo-operated valves such as steam turbine valves, boiler feed pump turbine valves, turbine-driven fan valves and compressor valves.
  • Automatic Turbine Startup – Ensures the safe and proper start-up and loading of turbine-generator units.
  • Rotor Stress Monitor – Monitors turbine acceleration on start-up and load changes when on-line to keep rotor stress levels below their limits.
  • Over-Speed Protection – Prevents excessive turbine speed that could lead to equipment damage.

"By choosing Emerson, power generators get the full benefit of our wealth of expertise in turbines and turbine control,” explained Yeager. “This expertise translates into a proven control system that helps our customers improve unit stability, responsiveness and thermal efficiencies.”
