Emerson Process Management Power & Water Solutions offers several tuning tools
for users of its distributed control systems. The new tools,
OvationTune and Unit Calibration Advisor, make it easy to
improve plant efficiency and profitability. OvationTune automatically
provides optimal PID parameter values for process loops, allowing
faster plant start-up as well as online adjustments of tuning
parameters to enhance process efficiency. The Unit Calibration
Advisor enables plant engineers and operators to re-tune a
plant's combustion control system to adjust for field drive
element wear and tear.
OvationTune
OvationTune improves plant performance by concentrating on
minor system errors before they become major problems. OvationTune
automatically provides optimal PID parameter values for process
loops, allowing faster plant start-up as well as online adjustments
of tuning parameters to enhance process efficiency. This new
module provides system-wide functionality for automated loop
tuning for process operators and plant engineers. With OvationTune,
it doesn't matter whether you're dealing with tuning start-up
conditions or tuning on the fly — both operations are
supported.

Unit Calibration Advisor
The Unit Calibration Advisor, compatible with both Ovation®
and WDPF® systems, enables plant engineers and operators
to re-tune a plant's combustion control system to adjust for
field drive element wear and tear, thereby reducing fuel costs
and improving plant profits. The Unit Calibration Advisor
analyzes performance trends to calibrate the relationship
between existing curves and predicted replacement curves based
on current operating conditions. The Unit Calibration Advisor
can adaptively tune feedforward control schemes in power plants
or can advise plant engineers, technicians and operators of
suggested updates.
The Unit Calibration Advisor restores operation performance
with data snapshots that have been collected over time. Through
regression analysis, the Unit Calibration Advisor provides new datasets. It then uses this retained information to remind
operators which DCS setpoints are necessary for a particular
process to be efficient at any load level, based on past performance
and current factors affecting the equipment. The package calibrates
the relationship between the DCS setpoints and the equipment,
and reports calibration deviations to the operator, indicating
where and when maintenance is necessary.
