How FOUNDATION Fieldbus™ Can Improve Unit Protection in Utility Power Plants
Ensuring that a power or steam generation unit will trip when required in compliance with NFPA-85 Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code and/or an OEM specified trip condition is present should always be a major concern for design and implementation engineers. Of equal concern is preventing unnecessary unit trips or load reductions which not only reduce plant production but can also lead to excessive equipment degradation.
In either case it is necessary to have the highest possible level of confidence that the process signals within the control system are reliable and accurate. Traditionally, power generation plants have relied on hardwired 4-20mA signals to achieve this level of confidence. However, with the introduction of FOUNDATION Fieldbus to the power and other industries, the question has arisen regarding its usage for critical signals that determine the trip conditions.
With on board device diagnostics, FOUNDATION Fieldbus provides operators with alerts to off normal device conditions such as plugged impulse lines or improper valve position that could result in bad or incorrect signals that have the potential to result in either a spurious trip or misreading conditions that should result in a unit trip. This presentation will address how FOUNDATION Fieldbus, smart digital field devices, an asset management capability, and integrated with a distributed controls system, combined can improve unit protection functions in both industrial and utility power generation plants in terms of reliability and a higher level of confidence in the data upon which the trip is based.
