Prerequisites
Students must have a good understanding of the Ovation® system architecture.
Experience working in a Solaris/Unix environment is helpful but not necessary. Prior completion of OV100-UNX, OV210-UNX and either OV200-UNX-1.8.X or OV200-UNX-1.9.X is highly recommended but not required.
Description
The course will provide students with an understanding of Ovation system licensing, security, configuration, backup, and recovery. Students will learn how to navigate the Ovation file system as well as basic administration skills. Students will also explore Ovation workstation hardware. This course is intended for Ovation system administrators and those wishing to complete the Ovation Certification Program.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, using the reference material provided,
the student will be able to:
- Navigate and understand Ovation PowerTools
- Understand licensing of the Ovation system
- Implement process control and user security in the Ovation system
- Apply system configuration changes to the Ovation system
- Add new and modify existing drops to the Ovation system
- Navigate and understand the Ovation file systems, structure, sharing, and security
- Backup the Ovation database and required files to various media
- Load an Ovation system
- Recover the Ovation database and required files from backup
- Understand upgrading and maintaining the Ovation hardware
- Apply Unix commands
- Manage the use of an internal and external floppy and
mount and share directories and files
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a text editor
- Manage software packages using the "pkginfo," "pkgrm," and "pkgadd" commands
Course Components
Module 1
- Navigate the file structure
- Apply UNIX commands
- Manage files remotely using the r-commands and ftp command
- Understand the VI editor and the Open Windows editor
- Manage the use of an internal and external floppy
Module 2
- Describe, compare and contrast the four major functions of the ADMIN tool and how they perform those functions
- Modify the software configuration of the system
- Use the Solaris SCCS system via the ADMIN tool
- Use the UNIX SCCS system
- Explain the advantages of using SCCS
- Explain the sequence of actions required to properly change the software configuration of the system
- Identify and evaluate the types of changes that can be made to the software configuration of the system using the ADMIN tool
- Use the Init tool to add a new drop to the system
Module 3
- Create new user accounts
- Configure a menu for the new accounts
- Create and modify the passwords for the new user accounts
Module 4
- Implement new user accounts on an Ovation station using the ADMIN tool
- Define the existing access provided to any user of the system as defined by the Security Builder tool
- Define security objects, security sessions and point access groups
- Describe the function of each security object configured into the system
- Configure security system to provide appropriate access to meet plant needs.
Module 5
- Extract data tables from the Oracle database
- Evaluate and modify data tables extracted from the Oracle database
- Import data tables into the Oracle database
Module 6
- Discuss the loading procedure
- Load the software server
- Use the software maintenance tool
- Configure the Ovation release software
- Load the regular engineering workstation
Module 7
- Create a complete database backup
- Create a partial database backup
- Reload the Power Tools database
- Demonstrate the use of the fsck command
- Demonstrate the use of the ufsdump and ufsrestore command
- Demonstrate the use of the newfs command
- Create a ‘mirrored’ hard disk using the dd command
- Mount and share directories and files
Module 8
- Implement the use of the software maintenance tool
- Evaluate and assess basic message files:
/var/adm/messages
/usr/wdpf/log/wdpf_messages
/usr/wdpf/mmi/user/home/data/.genmsg.log (and its backup)
- Manage software packages using the pkginfo/pkgrm/pkgadd commands
