SmartProcess® Global Performance Advisor
(SP-GPA)

  Duration
Five Days

Scheduled Dates

  • Classes offered upon request in 2007. Please contact the Training Registrar at 412-963-3900.

Prerequisites
Students should have an interest in process optimization for performance and cost improvements as well as a basic knowledge of power plant operations and processes, Microsoft Windows operating systems, and Ovation and/or WDPF WEStation distributed control systems.

Description
The SmartProcess Global Performance Advisor (GPA) allows operators to identify controllable losses, track equipment performance against design specifications, and quickly identify problematic process areas to reduce operating costs.

This course is intended for students who will install, maintain and/or use the SmartProcess Global Performance Advisor (GPA) in a power plant environment. This course will also serve as a good resource for those who have not yet purchased or installed the SmartProcess GPA, but are interested in understanding the potential value of this optimization module. For more information on the SmartProcess Global Performance Advisor, click here.

This course describes the capabilities and limitations of the GPA as well as the hardware and software required to implement this optimization module. The course also provides hands-on exercises to install, use and backup the GPA and the information that it generates. Students will load the GPA on a workstation and learn how to create a workspace, a project, and a functional block diagram. Hands-on exercises will include:

  • Building Feedwater Heater Performance Calculations
  • Building Steam Turbine Performance Calculations
  • Building Condenser Calculations

Data agents and communication on local and enterprise systems will also be described.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, using the reference material provided, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the capabilities and limitations of the SmartProcess GPA
  2. Recognize the process data required to use the GPA effectively
  3. Understand the hardware and software requirements for a GPA
  4. Load the GPA on a workstation
  5. Know how to create and reopen GPA projects and workspaces
  6. Become aware of, and know how to apply, GPA tools and algorithms
  7. Understand data agents
  8. Know how to create tags and import data
  9. Build and display performance calculations
  10. Recognize local and enterprise communication techniques
  11. Know how to back-up a GPA system
